Solace Teachings logoThe Solace Teachings are education and support programs designed to build awareness, fluency and comfort with death and dying. When we are able to face death as a natural part of life our lives, we have the potential to be transformed. Ironically, it is death awareness that puts us into a “right relationship” with life. Many ancient cultures and wisdom traditions experience their relationship to death as a path for spiritual growth and awakening.

The Solace Teachings are intended to support people in doing the sacred and important inner work of bringing oneself fully and responsibly to the bedside of the dying and to our own lives.

The Solace Teachings compliment and serve as cross-disciplinary training for health care professionals, volunteers, family caregivers and as a personal practice.

Living Bridges sponsored two, 3-day; level 1 Solace Teachings trainings in 2014. Participants were nurses, teachers, volunteers, massage therapists and community members. Nurses received 32 continuing education credits for the training, which fulfills the total requirements needed in New Mexico for two years.

Here’s what some of them said about their experience:

I have greater inspiration for self-care and strong, quiet leadership as an agent for change in health care administration. Without a doubt, the concept of a new paradigm, where the wellness of the caregiver is not separate from the wellness of the patient, is what drew me to this workshop experience. I love the inclusion, spaciousness and non-dual message of true hope this brings. The importance of expression in whatever its form is something I wish to encourage in my clients as in myself. Rhonda St. Martin, RN, Albuquerque, NM
Wow, all this time I thought I was alone in my observations of the dying process. For me this is very validating. I remarked to one of my nursing instructors that watching a patient’s death was much the same as watching a birth. My teacher gave me a funny look and said nothing. I guess I wasn’t crazy after all.David Harrington, RN, Santa Fe, NM
I am fascinated by dying. I saw Solace: Wisdom of the Dying while going through my spiritual teacher’s death and was so moved and stunned by the film’s beauty and depth of its content. Some aspects of the training will be easily applied to my classes with high school students as I am always looking for activities that connect us to ourselves and our own wholeness. Thank you for the heart and soul that was put into this training.Amy Tyksinski, Educator, Albuquerque, NM
